Stardew Valley Troubleshooting Guide
If you are having technical problems with Stardew Valley on PC, please check the following list for your issue. If you can’t find a solution to the problem, please send an email to [email protected]
My save file is no longer showing up in the Load Game Menu
Stardew Valley fans have been treated to a number of updates over the years, including Stardew Valley's multiplayer farming, four new farm maps, nd the incredible 1.4 'Everything Update' that. Stardew Valley Farmhand Management. This utility is a stand alone save editor which allows users to add and manage more than four players in a multiplayer save file from Stardew Valley. No modifications or frameworks for Stardew Valley, such as SMAPI, are required for this functionality, and up to 8 players can be added to a vanilla multiplayer.
This can happen for a variety of reasons, but often the save file can be repaired or salvaged. Please check out this guide: Missing/Corrupt Save File Troubleshooting Guide

Stardew Valley is not launching on PC
Here are a few things to try:
- Make sure either headphones or speakers are plugged in. An active audio source of some kind is required in order to play Stardew Valley (this will be fixed in update 1.4).
- Delete the startup_preferences folder in %AppData%/StardewValley
- Go into the game file directly and then into the folder titled “_CommonRedist”, then “XNA”, then “4.0”, then “xnafx40_redist” installer. Once there, run the installer and hit repair.
- If you don’t have SMAPI installed, right-click on Stardew Valley in Steam, then go to Properties > Set Launch Options, and make sure it is empty.
Stardew Valley is not launching on Mac
Run the Terminal application (if you’re not sure how, click the magnifying glass in the top right, type Terminal, and select the first result). In the window that appears, paste in the following line (CHANGE “USER” to your username) and press enter:
sudo chown -v “$USER” ~/.config
This should correct the ownership of a folder that Stardew Valley needs to write under.
You’ll probably be prompted for your password by the above command, and then it’ll output something like /Users/yournamehere/.config. Try running Stardew Valley again, and hopefully it’ll work this time.
Can’t find friends’ farms in multiplayer, or the “Enter Invite Code” button not showing up.
This will happen if you’re not running from Steam or GOG (i.e. you’re running a standalone version of the game). To fix this, make sure you’re running the game from Steam or GOG.
This can also happen if you’re behind a firewall that is specifically blocking connections to gaming addresses. Check your firewall settings to ensure that Stardew Valley, or gaming services like Steam or GOG are not being blocked. Check the settings on any internet security products you are using, like OpenDNS, as well.

There’s no sound
Please make sure that you have an audio device plugged in and enabled. If you’re on Windows, right click on the speaker icon in the system tray in the bottom right corner of the screen, and select “open volume mixer”. Make sure that Stardew Valley is not muted and is within an audible volume range.
During the character creation screen at the beginning of Stardew Valley, players are faced with a variety of choices.
Some affect gameplay while others don’t at all. One common question is, “What does the Favorite Thing in Stardew Valley do?”

We go over everything from unlocks to what professions are the best to take!
The character creation screen gives players a variety of choices. There are 2 genders, 24 skin tones, 32 hairstyles, 112 shirts, 20 accessories, and 2 animals to pick from.
Players can also change their hair, eye, and pants color. Animal preference is one choice that affects gameplay. Your pick determines which pet will arrive on the farm later.
Gender does not affect in-game marriages so feel free to pick either one.
One of the last options to talk about is Favorite Thing. A custom text field on the character creation screen, Favorite Thing is referenced in Stardew Valley whenever the player eats a stardrop.
For example, if you enter “apples” as your favorite thing, when you eat a stardrop you will be shown the following message:
You found a stardrop! Your mind is filled with thoughts of Apples. Your maximum energy level has increased.
And the other effect your favorite thing has is… absolutely nothing. There is nothing else it does.
It literally serves one purpose and that is that every time you eat a stardrop the game will tell you that the stardrop reminds you of your favorite thing.
Be careful what you enter as your favorite thing! It would certainly make for a weird situation if your favorite thing was Grandma or your best-friend Ted.
Secret Favorite Thing
However, there is one secret to be found. If you enter ConcerendApe as your favorite thing you will get a secret message. Instead of the usual message, you will get:
ConcerendApe is a reference to the sole creator of Stardew Valley. Eric Barone is his real name and he singlehandedly programmed the game, wrote it’s story and dialogue, and created all the art and sound effects.
It took him four long years to get us this great game and we can pay him a small homage by making him our favorite thing in Stardew Valley.
So there you have it, the favorite thing field in the character creation screen of Stardew Valley serves little to no purpose and will not affect your gameplay.

It can, however, make for some funny moments when you do find a stardrop.
